Swim Meets 101

  • Swimmers should arrive at the pool by 4:45pm for Home Meets and 5:00pm for Away Meets. Charleston Village will have first warm-up (5:00-5:30pm) at Home Meets and second warm-up (5:30-6:00pm) at Away Meets.
  • Meets start promptly at 6:00pm. Swimmers check in with Kid Pushers prior to scheduled warm-up time. Parents check in with the Volunteer Coordinator to receive equipment and instructions.
  • Each Swimmer will be assigned a Swimmer Number. Please make sure that your swimmer comes to each meet with that number written in permanent marker, large and clear on both arms. Timers use this number to identify swimmers.
  • All swimmers will sit with their teammates in a designated area. These areas will be set up based on age and gender and will be assigned a Kid Pusher to supervise the swimmers. Only the Kid Pushers will be allowed to be in each assigned area. They will make sure the swimmers will get to the blocks for the start of their races. Everyone else is expected to sit in the spectator area. No parents will be allowed in the Clerk of Course Area, which will be clearly marked.
  • 6 year olds and under swim 15 yards of freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke (they do not swim butterfly)
  • 7 to 10 year olds swim 25 yards, or 1 pool length, of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly.
  • 11 year olds and up swim 50 yards, or 2 pool lengths, of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly.
  • The order of events is as follows: 7 & 8 medley relay (boys then girls), 9 & 10 medley relay (boys then girls), 11 & 12 medley relay (boys then girls), 13 & 14 medley relay (boys then girls), and 15 to18 medley relay (boys then girls) medley relay – followed by individual events by age group.
  • The first individual stroke event is freestyle. We start with the youngest age group and work up to the eldest group. We complete all age groups of one stroke before moving to the next stroke. We continue in this manner with backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and then ending with the freestyle relays.
  • Every swimmer has the opportunity to swim all of the strokes available according to their age group.
  • The first heat of each event is a scoring heat, or main event. Swimmers chosen for these heats are at the discretion of the Coaching Staff.
  • Swimmers in the first heat, or main event, gets place ribbons that will be given out the day after a meet. If you are placed in the first heat, or main event, and a Stroke and Turn Judge disqualifies you, you will NOT get a ribbon. Everyone else will get a participation ribbon the night of the meet.
  • The score of the two competing teams will be announced at the end of the meet.
  • Times for the swimmers will be posted within a day or two after the meet.
